agnyecskaThe University Settlement Society of New York is an American organization that provides educational and social services to immigrants and low-income families.
Programs serve New Yorkers of all ages and include child care, pre-school, housing assistance, mental health services, college and career preparation, crisis intervention, activities for seniors, arts events, English classes, after-school programs and summer camps.
I completed a one-year English course organized by the New York Public Library, and afterwards I was referred to the University Settlement for another year. This program was more like a formal school system. We had exams, worked on group assignments, wrote essays, and developed topics which we then presented together.
Together with Leonardo, I took part in a European-themed fashion show – I was the host, while Leonardo was the male model. Every three months we had tests, followed by a class party. Most of my classmates were Chinese (about ten of them), and there was also a Mexican student, Hugo. They brought traditional dishes from their countries, and I brought strudel.
We celebrated Halloween, Christmas, and Easter together, and I really enjoyed the whole experience. Our teacher, Peggy, was wonderful, and so was the school director, Joe.

Elvégeztem egy egyéves angol nyelvtanfolyamot, amelyet a New York-i Közkönyvtár szervezett, majd utána újabb egy évre az University Settlementbe irányítottak.
Ez a program inkább egy hivatalos iskolarendszerre hasonlított. Vizsgákat tartottunk, csoportos feladatokat dolgoztunk ki, esszéket írtunk, és témákat dolgoztunk ki, amelyeket aztán együtt mutattunk be.
