Groundhog Day

New York Mayor, Bill de Blasio proclaims spring is around the corner, short winter, early spring. The legend of Groundhog Day is based on an old Scottish couplet:
“If Candlemas Day is bright and clear, there’ll be two winters in the year.”
Candlemas a Christian festival held on February 2nd to commemorate the purification of the Virgin Mary (after childbirth, according to Jewish law) and the presentation of Christ in the Temple. Candles were traditionally blessed at this festival.
According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will persist for six more weeks.

With that in mind, groundhogs across the country most famously Punxsutawney Phil. emerge from their dwellings on February 2nd and judge whether winter is waning or we have six more weeks to go. Although not of the same fame as Punxsutawney Phil, New York City has its own groundhogs and events to celebrate Groundhog Day.

The Staten Island Zoo is home to groundhog Staten Island Chuck. At 7 a.m. on February 2nd, Staten Island Chuck will make his official prediction. Staten Island Chuck will be making appearances throughout the day. The ceremony is free to attend. Full details are available on the Staten Island Zoo web site.
